SUSTAINABLE TAILORING SEEKING BOLD WOMEN OF COLOR
When I first started pitching Scarlet Empyre, I kept stumbling on marketing advisors, incubators and investors who’d tell me that it wasn’t a good idea. That women of color don’t have the purchasing power to afford quality tailoring, that they can’t even appreciate what it takes to make it. That I was wasting my time if I was going to focus on that demographic because they —we— are not worth it.
I might have believed it if I hadn’t heard it, and ignored it, a thousand times before. I bet you have, too.
Clearly they don’t know who we are. They never learned that every single time they put us down, we aim higher. That their contempt is our fuel. And that we don’t want to be “tolerated”, invisible, quietly sitting on the sidelines. We want to be ourselves, and win, unapologetically.
So, I decided to prove them wrong and commit to putting us —women of color or racialized women— left, right, front and center. In 2024, Scarlet Empyre will launch with a limited edition, heart throbbing capsule of tailored basics made from upcycled fabrics.
If “upcycled” doesn’t sound good to you, maybe “cotton and silk denim” or “wool and silk tuxedo” will reassure you that these fabrics are as high quality as the women who’ll wear them.
Together, we can’t not succeed. 🔥
